As many of you know, leadership is my jam. My business Break the Norm Leadership focuses on helping develop leadership skills in working professionals. My vision has always been to add an arm to the business that focuses on helping develop leadership skills in our youth. Until recently, I thought that vision was far down the road but it appears to be coming to fruition sooner than later.
While at a leadership summit a few weeks back, I met a keynote speaker that shared about a global nonprofit that he had been helping build for over 30 years. The nonprofit is called Destination Imagination and from what I understand it encompasses everything I had ever imagined regarding developing leadership skills in the youth.
"Destination Imagination is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic Challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. Our participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process."
Doesn’t this sound awesome! I am working on putting together a Break the Norm Leadership elementary aged team, that is co-ed and welcomes kids 3rd-5th grade. It will start in September and run through the school year. Practice will be 1x per week (in Beaverton) from 6-7:30p, the day of the week has yet to be selected. The cost is $125/per month plus competition fees/expenses in the Spring. I have attached a link to the website so that you can learn more about the program and possibly get involved. I will be holding an informational night in September for those that are interested in learning more.
Please let me know if you have a child or know a child, within our age group that might be interested in joining the team. We are also looking for sponsors to help fund the competition event. Would love to hear your thoughts!
