Shaun White

February 26, 2018

"White is the new Gold" is the phrase the media has been using when referring to Shaun White and his 3rd Olympic Gold Medal. After finishing his gold winning run in the men's snowboarding halfpipe he had both hands in the air as he yelled with pride. When the judges announced his winning score his yelling quickly turned to tears. These tears were not just any tears but the tears of a champion.

As he hugged his coach and his family he said, "I can't believe it, I'm so happy! All that hard work! All that hard work!". As I heard him say these words to the world, it made me think of the expression, "chop wood, carry water". This expression refers to the old saying, "Practice and repeat. Practice and repeat. Practice and repeat." He took a natural talent and love for snowboarding, added hard work and repetition, and he turned it into a masterful strength that has made him the #1 in the world, 3 times.

Shaun White defied all the odds at the Olympics. He ignored the media as they ranted about his old age and recent injury. He focused on his unshakeable belief in himself and the daily training he had done with his coach. Together, they “chopped wood and carried water”. I believe that this training regimen is what set him apart in the end and took him from being ordinary because he was behind at the start of his last run to extraordinary as the Gold medal winner. As heavyweight champion Joe Frazier once said, “Champions aren’t made in the ring, they are merely recognized there. What you cheat on in the early morning will show up in the ring under the bright lights.”

Elite athletes are great example of what can be accomplished with training, discipline, dedication and passion. We may not be standing on the podium at the Olympics, but most of won’t reach our goals without the same mentality that carries athletes to success. To go from ordinary to great at something we all need the right training regime. If you are a business leader that is tired of being ordinary and are ready to "chop wood and carry water" to be extraordinary, let’s chat. Together lets achieve your wildest dreams.
