8 months ago, I had a vision. I didn't know what it meant. I didn't know any details. All I knew was that a seed had been planted in my heart for change. At that time, the only thing that I knew for sure was that I needed to reach out to two of my friends who are also visionaries.
I invited them both for coffee and as we sat down I began to share my vision. In the moment, I was short on words and all that came out was, "I have a dream". How cliche right? Both friends gave me a look of curiosity mixed with concern, but encouraged me to proceed. I shared with them that my vision involved creating community of like-minded people. I wanted to bring together local leaders, regardless of the brand they represent at work to address real world problems. It didn’t matter to me if they were related to business, politics or social justice. I shared with them that many companies are battling the same battle so I asked, “Why not start working together?".
On Oct 25th we piloted our first session. We called it, Start Now! and our topic of conversation was focused on "attracting and retaining the minority worker". Unlike most DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) events we put a twist on it and focused not on specific company initiatives but our roles as individuals in creating the change we want to see. We talked about how we can create an atmosphere where minorities feel they can put down roots here in Portland. We discussed how to support, educate and encourage minority entrepreneurship.
As a result of the event we are creating a 6 week workshop series teaching people the first steps and skills of entrepreneurship. To pull off a series like this we need your help. We need ideas for content, speakers on these topics, event space, advertising to attract interested participants, translators and much, much more.
If you are interested in learning more or participating in this series big or small, we need your help. Please reply to this email saying "count me in" and someone from our team will connect with you on how you can help.
Remember: Change STARTS with you!
