"It's not personal, it's just business"
I was in a conversation the other day where someone was telling me a story about an incident that had happened at work. She expressed that in the end, one party felt like they got the short end of the stick, but defended it by saying “It is not personal, it is just business".
From that point forward, all day that phrase was on repeat in my head. The more I thought about it, the more agitated I got. While at dinner later that evening with a friend I blurted out of no where, "but business is PERSONAL!". My friend looked at me confused and suddenly I had to explain myself.
"It's not personal, it's just business". What kind of phrase is that!
Everything in business is personal because everything in business revolves around building relationships. Another phrase that people often say is, "keep business, business and keep personal, personal". The reality is that life isn't that black and white. Life is personal and emotional and that is not a bad thing. Often those are the key factors that drive us to be the most innovative at work. To keep up in the business world these days, you must be innovative.
So how do you create innovative teams? BY GETTING PERSONAL! My whole job revolves around business and team performance. I continually working with my clients to be more collaborative and tell them they must first trust each other so that they can then debate each other. Innovation starts when people trust each other and feel comfortable enough to debate one another. Now I am not saying share your whole life story and its intimate details but take time to learn about one another and create connecting relationships.
John Maxwell, one of the world's leadership gurus says, “Everyone communicates, few connect". He even wrote a whole book on it. To connect with others, you must get personal with others. To collaborate with others you must connect with others. To innovate with others you must collaborate with others. To grow businesses with others, you must innovate with others. Therefore it is in my belief the phrase "it's not personal, it's just business" is wrong! Business is very personal because it is collaborative and to be collaborative means to build trusting, connecting and personal relationships with those around you.
My challenge for you this week is to get personal with others. Take a few minutes each day to connect with a few of your colleagues and coworkers. You may not see the results immediately but I guarantee if you continue, you will see them in the long run!
