"The only way to make yourself INDISPENSABLE is to make yourself DISPENSABLE." -John C. Maxwell
This is one of my favorite quotes by John C. Maxwell, yet when I share it with others, I typically get a sideways look of confusion. Then people respond, "why would I want to make myself dispensable? I would be putting myself in jeopardy of losing what I have worked so hard to earn!"
When Maxwell says this he is referring to something different than most people think. He is referring to a leader's ability to grow other leaders. How many of you are now thinking, "how do I grow a leader?" You do it by helping them develop their ability to influence others because that is what leadership is all about. It is my belief that this is the only true way to measure a leader's ability. When you are able to grow and develop other leaders, they are able to replace you which makes your position dispensable. What it doesn't do is make you dispensable...it truly makes you INDISPENSABLE!!!
Why would a company or organization get rid of the person whose teams are always optimizing at peak performance and able to self sustain!? When you make your position dispensable, you allow yourself to be utilized in other ways. If a company knows they can add you to any team and guarantee success, there is nothing more valuable than that!
I challenge you today to be honest with yourself and ask, "what kind of leader do I want to be? Do I want to be a leader that grows leaders or a leader that grows followers?" I hope that you will be a leader that makes new leaders, then I think that you will find that making yourself dispensable, in time, will make you INDISPENSABLE.
