Dear Elliott,

How do I set realistic goals and hold myself accountable for these goals?

Dear Goal Setter That Struggles to Follow Through,

Great question! Setting realistic goals and holding ourselves accountable is a challenge many face, especially when the initial excitement wears off. Here are some tips to make your goal-setting

process more effective and, most importantly, achievable:

1. Start Small and Specific

One common pitfall is setting goals that are too broad or ambitious. Instead of saying, “I want to get healthier,” try something specific like, “I will go for a 30-minute walk three times a week.” Smaller, measurable goals are easier to tackle and build confidence as you progress.

2. Use the SMART Framework

SMART goals are:

  • Specific: Clearly define what you want to accomplish.

  • Measurable: Include criteria to track progress.

  • Achievable: Ensure the goal is realistic within your circumstances.

  • Relevant: Align the goal with your values and priorities.

  • Time-bound: Set a deadline to create urgency.

For example, instead of saying, “I’ll save money,” you might say, “I’ll save $200 per month for six months.”

3. Break It Down

Large goals can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller milestones or action steps. If your goal is to write a book, start with a daily or weekly word count. Progress builds momentum.

4. Build Accountability Into Your Plan

Accountability can take many forms. Here are a few ideas:

  • Buddy System: Share your goals with a trusted friend or colleague who can check in with you.

  • Tracking Tools: Use apps, journals, or spreadsheets to log your progress.

  • Celebrate Milestones: Reward yourself for hitting milestones to stay motivated.

5. Focus on the Why

Understanding the deeper reason behind your goal keeps you motivated when things get tough. Ask yourself, “Why does this goal matter to me?” When the going gets tough, reconnecting with your “why” can reignite your commitment.

6. Embrace Flexibility

Life happens. If you miss a day or fall off track, don’t be discouraged. Adjust your plan as needed and keep going. Progress isn’t linear, but consistency over time leads to results.

7. Reflect and Adjust

Schedule regular check-ins to evaluate your progress. What’s working? What isn’t? This isn’t about beating yourself up but refining your approach to set yourself up for success.

Remember, dear Goal Setter, even small steps forward are still steps forward. With a thoughtful plan and a touch of Elliott’s enthusiasm, you can achieve your goals and more.

Cheers to a year of growth and accomplishment!
